Bullet Points 09/13/07

by Phil Gons on September 13th, 2007

bullet-points-091307.jpgHere are today’s bullet points:

Resources on Race: Timmy Brister provides a host of links to resources dealing with the subject of race.

New X-ray Makes Ancient Texts Readable: Formerly unreadable manuscripts are now decipherable (HT: Engadget).

The hidden content in ancient works could be illuminated by a light source 10 billion times brighter than the Sun. The technique employs Britain’s new facility, the Diamond synchrotron, and could be used on works such as the Dead Sea Scrolls or musical scores by Bach.

Two New Bible Visualization Tools

by Phil Gons on September 4th, 2007

two-new-bible-visualization-tools.jpgI came across two new online tools that allow you to see visually some helpful data from Scripture.

Bible Word Locator

The first is called the Bible Word Locator, and it comes from OpenBible.info. (These are the same folks who brought us the Bible Geocoding, which we blogged about back in March.) It’s helpful tool that allows you to see in a snapshot where a word occurs throughout the entire Bible. Once you visualize your search, it’s fun to try to figure out the context of the occurrences. Give it a try!

Tomb of Herod the Great Found

by Phil Gons on May 8th, 2007

HerodiumArchaeologist Ehud Netzer, Professor Emeritus in the Department of Classical Archaeology at The Hebrew University of Jerusalem (Wikipedia), has found the tomb of Herod the Great at Herodium (Wikipedia) ending a 35-year search. You can view the site at Google Maps or Google Earth (HT: OpenBible.info).

Herod the Great, who ruled over Judaea from about 37 to 4 BC, is perhaps best known for his cruelty as described in the New Testament, but also for the grand ancient buildings he constructed in what is now Israel.

According to the Gospel of Matthew, he ordered the execution of all young male children in the village of Bethlehem, so as to avoid the loss of his throne to a newborn “King of the Jews”, the baby Jesus.

The jealous leader also executed his first wife Mariamne and three of his sons accused of conspiring against him.

One of his other sons, Herod Antipas who inherited half of the kingdom after his father’s death, is the one who ruled at the time of Jesus’ death and is said to be the one who executed John the Baptist.

But Herod the Great is also famed for his construction of the Second Jewish Biblical Temple, the Massada fortress and the ancient Roman town of Caesaria in what is now central Israel.

Much of his life is known through the 1st century AD Jewish historian Flavius Josephus.

“The discovery is significant because first of all he is a well-known figure and also because of his proximity to the time of Jesus’ birth,” said Netzer.

Here is the press release: Tomb of King Herod discovered at Herodium by Hebrew University archaeologist (Word).

Piper on the Resurrection of Jesus

by Phil Gons on February 28th, 2007

John Piper shares eight reasons that he believes Jesus was raised from the dead.

  1. Jesus himself testified to his coming resurrection from the dead.
  2. The tomb was empty on Easter.
  3. The disciples were almost immediately transformed from men who were hopeless and fearful after the crucifixion (Luke 24:21, John 20:19) into men who were confident and bold witnesses of the resurrection (Acts 2:24, 3:15, 4:2).
  4. Paul claimed that, not only had he seen the risen Christ, but that 500 others had seen him also, and many were still alive when he made this public claim.
  5. The sheer existence of a thriving, empire-conquering early Christian church supports the truth of the resurrection claim.
  6. The Apostle Paul’s conversion supports the truth of the resurrection.
  7. The New Testament witnesses do not bear the stamp of dupes or deceivers.
  8. There is a self-authenticating glory in the gospel of Christ’s death and resurrection as narrated by the biblical witnesses.

Witherington on The Jesus Family Tomb

by Phil Gons on February 28th, 2007

The Jesus Family TombBen Witherington, who recently offered his critique of the forthcoming documentary entitled The Lost Tomb of Jesus, now offers his critique of the corresponding book, The Jesus Family Tomb. Here’s a selection:

There is a major problem with the analysis of the names on these ossuaries. By this I mean one has to explain why one is in Hebrew, several are in Aramaic, but the supposed Mary Magdalene ossuary is in Greek. This suggests a multi-generation tomb, not a single generation tomb, and indeed a tomb that comes from after A.D. 70 after the Romans had destroyed the temple mount and Jewish Christians fled the city.

Jesus’ Tomb Found?

by Phil Gons on February 26th, 2007

Talpiot TombFilm-makers James Cameron (cf. IMDb) and Simcha Jacobovici (cf. Wikipedia and IMDb) are working on a documentary entitled The Lost Tomb of Jesus, which will air on the Discovery Channel on March 4 at 9 p.m. ET/PT. The documentary sets out to prove that Jesus was married to Mary Magdalene and had a son named Judah. These claims are based on a 1980 discovery of a cave in Jerusalem containing 10 stone caskets. Just recently the names on those caskets have been determined: Jesua, son of Joseph, Mary, Mary, Mathew, Jofa and Judah, son of Jesua. Some are claiming that this cave contains the remains of Jesus and his family. There is also supposed DNA evidence identifying the body as Jesus’. A book entitled The Jesus Family Tomb by Simcha Jacobovici and Charles Pellegrino will be released tomorrow.
