The Importance of Your Church Sign
Woody Murray, a church communications specialist who helps churches reach their communities, writes about the importance and proper use of the church sign.
Often the most effective way to promote your church’s ministries is a church message sign.
Why? Your best prospects probably live close to the church. They very likely pass by it every day. They’re on the way to and from work, going to the grocery store, or running other errands. Many of these folks probably go by your church more than once a day.
If you don’t have a church message sign, you need to get one. If you do have one, you need to make sure the messages are very inviting and that they stay fresh. That is where many churches make a crucial mistake—they don’t devote enough time to their messages.
He gives several tips on how to use them properly.
- Essentials: Every church sign should contain the services times, church website address, and an invitation to guests.
- Scripture: Be careful in your use of Scripture. Negative messages like “Repent or Perish” may, without context and the corresponding message of hope, keep people from your church.
- Humor: Use humor very cautiously if at all.
- Conciseness: Be brief and concise: “Say what you need to say in seven to 10 words—even less if possible.”
- Pastor’s Name: It may be good to include the pastor’s name, but not at the expense of make the contents crammed. This is not an essential.
- Cost: Get as nice of a sign as you can fit in your budget.
