100-Foot Cross/Cell Phone Tower

by Phil Gons on July 25th, 2007

100-foot-crosscell-phone-tower.jpgLast week we mentioned the massive 60-meter cross that is scheduled to be built in Nazareth. Here’s another story about a big cross: Bible Christian Fellowship Church of Pequannock Township, NJ, is currently discussing the possibility of erecting a 100-foot cross. What makes this story interesting is that this cross would be a Verizon Wireless cell phone tower under cover.

The location is perfect for Verizon’s needs, and the church would get a free cross and perhaps money to boot. Sounds good for both parties, right? Not everyone is on board with the idea. Some think that it might make light of the cross.

What do you think? Would you consider it? Why or why not?

It gives a whole new meaning to “the POWER of the cross”.
Everything in the natural has a supernatural correlation.

If the world wants to pay the church’s bills, then I say rejoice! Hate to state the over-used verse (now becoming a cliché), but God said it, “The wealth of the wicked is laid up for the righteous”. Yes, it’s certainly easy to go down the road of being concerned that it’s “making light of the cross”, but sticking to legalism at the cost of missing the Lord’s benefits and blessing (e.g., the community is reminded of the Gospel by a HUGE cross while the church saves its money for other ministry) I think would be a huge mistake. Fact is, Verizon doesn’t have have a clue what they’re doing, and I think Paul would probably echo his thoughts from the Epistles concerning folks who had motives for personal gain, but as long as the Message was being spread he didn’t care.
