McKnight on New Monasticism
by Phil Gons on February 26th, 2007
Scot McKnight has an interesting post on “new monasticism.”
There is a movement underway, in some places quite significant and in others not yet significant, but it seems to be growing. It can threaten, it can transform, and it can provoke. It is called “new monasticism.”
Here are 12 characteristics of the movement:
- Relocation to the abandoned places of Empire.
- Sharing economic resources with fellow community members and the needy.
- Hospitality to the stranger.
- Lamen for racial divisions and pursuit of a just reconciliation.
- Humble submission to Christ’s Body, the church.
- Intentional formation in the way of Christ and the rule of the community.
- Nurturing common life among members.
- Support for celibate singles alongside monogamous marrieds and children.
- Geographical proximity to community members.
- Care for the plot of God’s earth given to us.
- Peacemaking in the midst of violence and conflict resolution.
- Commitment to a disciplined contemplative life.
